Mark S. Newnham

Dr. Newnham received his undergraduate medical degree from the University of the West Indies, completing his surgical residency in 1999 from the same institution. In 2006 he was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Postgraduate Programme in General Surgery at the University, and has been actively involved in the training of undergraduates and postgraduates in Jamaica and the Caribbean for the last 15 yrs.

​

A founding member of Island Medical Specialists, Dr. Newnham saw the opportunity to offer his private patients care in a a world-class center of excellence. His practice that closely mirrors his public Hospital practice with his special interests in Surgical Oncology (surgery on cancer patients), Vascular Surgery (in particular arterial surgery including aneurysms and lower limb bypasses), and General Surgery.

After 15 years practicing at a consulting level, Dr. Newnham is able to offer expert care in:

 

  • Thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He is an advocate for minimally invasive techniques including unilateral exploration when appropriate.

  • All breast diseases including breast lump assessment, breast cancer screening and Treatment including breast conservation, mastectomy and skin/nipple sparing mastectomy. The first skin-sparing mastectomy in Jamaica was performed by Dr. Newnham in 1999. He continues to refine the technique along with plastic surgery colleagues offering a range of immediate reconstruction options.

  • Gallbladder disease. He has been performing laparoscopic cholecystectomies as standard for gallstones, even in the emergency setting.

  • Gastrointestinal diseases, performing total and subtotal gastrectomy, various small bowel and colorectal resections for benign and malignant disease when appropriate.

  • Abdominal aortic and peripheral aneurysmal and occlusive disease. The techniques of open abdominal aneurysm repair have been refined in the last decade to result in adverse events comparable to first world centers.

  • Hernia surgery, including meshed repair under local anaesthesia when appropriate, incisional or recurrent hernias.

  • Haemorrhoidal assessment and management.

 

 

Described by one his mentors as being ‘the surgeon of choice’ in Jamaica, Dr. Newnham is available for both elective and emergency surgical care.
